Diamondhead Mississippi was named after a volcanic tuff cone on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu. Diamondhead Mississippi offers many Hawaiian influences including dynamic architecture roof lines and Hawaiian road names. Unlike most of the MS Gulf Coast, Diamondhead doesn’t offer beach access but it is a short 10 mile drive south to the white sand beaches diamondheadand Antebellum homes in Pass Christian or the “Old Town” Bay St Louis beach shops. Although there arnt beaches in Diamondhead, it offers unique characteristics of beautiful rolling topography, two 18-hole golf courses, multiple ponds and several lakes.  Many properties in Diamondhead have river or canal access and all Dimaondhead home owners have access to the private Diamondhead Maria / boat launch.

In the 1970s Diamondhead was designed by out of state developers to appeal to an older demographic looking for a place to retire near New Orleans. Since 1970, Diamondhead has changed from a retirement neighborhood to an official city that provides for the needs of a variety of age groups. Many of its residents now consist of young families.

diamondhead golfDuring the 1960s, the completion of I-10 through Hancock County as well as the construction of the Stennis Space Center drew much interest to what is now Diamondhead MS. This attention attracted The Diamondhead Property Corporation, the developers of Diamondhead MS. This Corporation maintained substantial property developments in a number of different States but due to I-10 and Stennis, the Diamondhead Corp setup developmental operations on the Mississippi Coast in the late 1960’s. In August 1969, they purchased six thousand acres directly west of Kiln MS. Interestingly, Hurricane Camille slammed into the Mississippi Gulf Coast causing mass destruction and put the Diamondhead project in jeopardy. Shortly after this disastrous storm, one of the primary shareholders flew over the property and noticed little damage.  After viewing such a powerful and highly destructive diamondhead 2hurricane do such insignificant damage to the area, the development moved forward. By June, 1973, no less than 3700 building lots for residential construction were sold!

Diamondhead was a fully planned community, with a Home Owners Association to keep out the riffraff and offer facilities designed to attract new buyers.  Some of the facilities include a Yacht Club, tennis courts, marine, pools, parks, trails, and a Country Club with multiple dining facilities. There are two professional 18-hole golf courses, shopping centers, and numerous restaurants and even a bowling alley. There’s even a private Airstrip which provides hanger space or tie down facilities and direct access to private homes allowing an aircraft to be housed at a home owner’s property.

There is a little something for everyone in Diamondhead MS. Its a small, quite, and very clean town with a very traditional vibe.

Jeepin’ the Coast Annual Event

“Jeepin’ the Coast Topless” is an annual event to benefit breast cancer awareness. The ride starts at the Bay St. Louis bridge and goes all the way to the Ocean Springs bridge on the other end of the coast. Many Jeeps will then hang a U-turn to circle back to Bay St. Louis for the after party. Funds are raised by buying shirts or simply giving what you can.
