Hills and Horses on Pemberton

by theorangedog on Nov.16, 2008, under Speed

Went out today with the lovely Mrs. Orangedog and enjoyed a quick jaunt around the Pemberton Trail at McDowell Mountain Park.

We went South to North, leaving the long, smooth downhill for the end. On the ride up we enjoyed nice views of the McDowell Mountains.

Like a mini-Four Peaks.

The Javelina Jundred was wrapping up as we started up, with the last few runners making their way down. We ran into one of their support tents and the people there were really nice. I assume they were volunteers, which is always the case at these races. In any event, we exchanged a few pleasantries, snagged a few pretzels, and were back on the trail.

We ran into a few other riders - one group was a bunch of kids that were cruising along down one of the few mildly rocky downhills at Pemberton. They were doing a great job for being probably no more than 12.

We passed Stoneman’s Wash, and somewhere near the 158th St. access point we ran into a group of three horses.

We weren’t quite sure what to make of these guys. I’ve heard and read that there are still wild horses in Arizona, but I didn’t know that there were any that close to the Phoenix area. We had thought that maybe they were loose from a nearby stable or home, but we never did find out. We were sure to let someone know, though, just in case.

The total trail distance was 15.46. The upcoming Dusk to Dawn Race will be 12 hours of Pemberton. It sounds like an amazing time, but I can’t make it this year. It is definitely marked on the 2009 Race Schedule.

Hi - really great web site you have created. I enjoyed reading this posting. I did want to write a comment to tell you that the design of this site is very aesthetically sweet. I used to be a graphic designer, now I am a copy editor for a marketing firm. I have always enjoyed working with computing machines and am attempting to learn code in my spare time (which there is never enough of lol).

Thanks Kristian. The site could use a bit of work but the images/graphic scheme were fun to play with.

Hadn’t come across your rugby site before - thanks for the link!

Coding takes a lot of work… and I’m with you - never enough time.
