Stray Dogs in Moscow

The WSJ.com has a great non-business piece on the stray dogs inhabiting Moscow. The article and video are here.
Also, for those of you who get cable, the On Demand service is now featuring a special from Nat Geo on Kavik, the timberwolf/malamute hybrid featured in the upcoming Call of the Wild. It’s part of the Dogs with Jobs series, which seems a stark economic comparison after reading the WSJ piece. But that’s an aside; after just a short training period, Kavik is harnessed up and hooked to 1,000lbs for a weight pull in the storyline. For a 140lb dog, that isn’t a tremendous amount, but considering his first two attempts failed because the sled wasn’t set free, he seemed to have a great attitude. Once he was able to get the sled moving, he moved it right along. To compare this to distance running, the general rule of thumb I’ve heard is that malamutes can pull about 1/3rd their body weight for extended periods of time.
